Dental Emergencies
A toothache can indicate a serious problem. These problems can range from eating food that is too hot or cold, an abscessed tooth, infected gums or teeth. To prevent further complications and more intense pain call your dentist immediately. You may want to apply an ice pack to the area to relieve some of the pain and take a mild pain reliever such as Alleve or Tylenol. Always ask your dentist first what pain reliever would be best for your situation.
Broken or Chipped Teeth
A broken or chipped tooth can result in severe pain. If you can, collect any part of the chipped or broken tooth to take in to the dentist. Apply ice to the affected area and call your dentist immediately. If you live in the Arlington, Virginia area call Doctors Roca. They have emergency care and Saturday office hours as well.
Knocked Out Teeth
A knocked out tooth can be saved if you act quickly. The most important step is to find the tooth and place the tooth into a small glass of milk. If you are in a place where milk is not readily available such as a football or baseball field then you can use a small cup of water with a pinch of salt in it. Then call your dentist immediately. The sooner you get both yourself and the tooth to your dentist the better the chances your tooth can be saved.
Crown or Root Canal
If you are having severe pain in your mouth the cause could be a rotting tooth. You need to call your dentist immediately; it could mean the difference between a crown and a root canal. If your pain is coming from a tooth but the gums are not infected then you would be given a crown. If the gums have become infected then a root canal will be performed. Call your dentist immediately to avoid further complications and if you live in Arlington, Virginia call Doctors Roca.
Bottom Line
You should never procrastinate when it comes to tooth pain. If you’re having tooth pain then you are having a dental emergency. Call your dentist and let the professional decide what needs to be done next.
