If a tooth has been damaged by decay, We will try to fix it with a restoration. Some of the time, though, there’s too much damage for the tooth to be repaired. Several other reasons why teeth are extracted are:

- When having orthodontics, teeth may need to be removed to create space..
- Patients with Cancer that are undergoing radiation therapy may need to have teeth removed proactively.
- Wisdom teeth are often extracted. They commonly come in during the ages of 18 to 25. The wisdom teeth sometimes are impacted and do not come in at all. They need to be removed if they are decayed or cause pain. Some wisdom teeth are crowded by other molars or may not have enough room to come in all of the way. This can cause the gums to be inflamed causing soreness and swelling.

There are a number of simple precautions you can take to avoid accident and injury to your teeth. One way to reduce the chances of damage to your teeth, lips, cheek and tongue is to wear a mouthguard when participating in sports or recreational activities that may pose a risk. Avoid chewing ice, popcorn kernels and hard candy, all of which can crack a tooth. Cut tape using scissors rather than your teeth.Accidents do happen, and knowing what to do when one occurs can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth. (more…)
